Later, Gator! This Alligator Gone Coin Was An Instant Sell-Out!
Only in America would you find a gator wandering across a golf course or floating blissfully in someone’s backyard pool. Perhaps that’s why this crocodilian reptile is officially called the American Alligator. It also serves as the mascot for the University of Florida and famously appeared as one of the most popular characters in Walt Kelley’s iconic Pogo comic strip that ran from 1948 to 1975 in which irascible, cigar-chomping Albert the Alligator and his voracious appetite was accused more than once of eating the gang’s missing dog. The gator depicted on this coin would appear to have devoured more than just the family pet as it’s shown swimming past an empty fishing boat with someone’s hat floating nearby. It looks like the missing angler got more than he bargained for this time out!
